The Future

New Cathedral Notre Dame de l’Assomption international design competition is the first step on the road to reconstruction.

On December 17, 2012 three finalists will be announced. From these will likely be the design and concept that give shape and scope to the next national Cathedral of Port-au-Prince

Our goal is to raise US$40 million in 3 years.  This will get us well on the way to building a Roman Catholic Cathedral that can again be a beacon of hope to an entire nation and can also serve as a fitting memorial to thousands who perished in the earthquake of January 12, 2010.

The edifice will be a technologically advanced structure that takes tradition into account.  Its construction will generate considerable economic activity and will stimulate the rebirth of the Capital’s largely destroyed downtown area. This vital structure will put into application national and international building codes to ensure a safe and effective center of worship.

As Mgr Guire Poulard, Archbishop of Port-au-Prince often says, the new Cathedral will evidence “signs of life.” It will also bind the city, now 3 million strong, more closely to the world, with love and kinship.
